We all know that any Babe Ruth single on a "Home Run Special" ball carries a premium price. We all know that the Bambino's endorsement, his facsimile signature, the iconic model name, and the decorative red-and-blue seams together provide the perfect canvas for Ruth's immortal autograph. But how many of us know the ball's history?

"I was mighty pleased when this Reach outfit asked me to put my ideas into a line of Big League mitts and gloves," Ruth is quoted as saying in a 1929 "Home Run Special" advertisement from Boys' Life magazine. The sidebar promotes Reach's official American League baseballs for a rather hefty sum of $2.00, then notes this with an accompanying picture: "Another fine ball is the Babe Ruth Home Run Special ball. Known everywhere as the liveliest, longest-lasting $1.00 ball made. Use it!" With his unprecedented fame and notoriety, Ruth's exciting new line of equipment flew off retail shelves, while his eye-catching, eponyomous ball became the number-one choice for Depression-era players of all ages nationwide. And so it remains for collectors today!

This fine example showcases a neatly, clearly and beautifully scripted "6-7" signature with all the hallmarks of Ruth's inimitable style. The Spalding/Reach stampings of "SPALDING No. 3RC / Babe Ruth Home Run Special" and the company logo are 75% boldly intact. Consistent medium toning and light scuffing overall. Full LOA from JSA.
